New Delhi, July 30 (IANS) Proceedings of the Lok Sabha were again adjourned on Thursday, minutes after the House reconvened at 2 p.m., amid sloganeering and loud protests by the Opposition.
Sandhya Ray, presiding over the House proceedings, said that many members have moved adjournment motions, but the Speaker hasn’t approved any of them, and therefore the regular legislative business of the House will continue.
The officiating Speaker asked the members to make their submissions, following which several lawmakers, including MoS for Housing and Urban Affairs Tokhan Sahu, MoS for Civil Aviation Murlidhar Mohol, and BJP member Bansuri Swara tabled their respective reports, making their submissions amid ruckus and sloganeering by the Opposition members. The Chair urged the members repeatedly to maintain decorum of the House, but the Opposition remained unrelenting and kept raising slogans.
“Please take your seats and contribute in conducting smooth proceedings of the House,” the Chair urged the Opposition benches, but the appeal went in vain.
Seeing no sign of abatement in the din, the Chair adjourned the House till 3 p.m.
Earlier in the day, when the House met for the fourth day of the second week, the persistent disruption forced adjournment soon after it convened. The Speaker adjourned the House till 2 p.m. after words of appreciation for India’s medal winners at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow.
The adjournment comes in light of a crucial bill presentation in the Lower House for consideration, discussion and approval.
The Prevention of Insults to National Honour (Amendment) Bill, 2006, seeks to make the intentional disruption or prevention of the singing of ‘Vande Mataram’ a punishable offence, placing the national song on the same legal footing as the national anthem,’ Jana Gana Mana’.
The bill was cleared by the Rajya Sabha on Wednesday.
