Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) announced that Rishabh Pant has resigned from his captaincy role, which has been approved by the franchise. Pant, who previously captained Delhi Capitals, took over as LSG’s skipper after being acquired for a record Rs 27 crore in the 2024 mega auction. However, the team’s performance under his leadership saw a decline, culminating in a tenth-place finish in the recent IPL season.
After leading LSG to a seventh-place finish last season, Pant’s team slipped further this year, ending at the bottom of the points table with only four wins out of 14 games. Tom Moody, the side’s global director of cricket, stated that Pant approached the franchise with his decision, which was accepted with gratitude. The focus now shifts to rebuilding and restructuring the team to achieve higher standards.
During Pant’s captaincy, LSG secured ten wins but faced 18 defeats over two seasons. Despite being known for his explosive batting, Pant struggled to replicate his usual form for LSG, scoring 581 runs at a strike rate of 135.74, significantly below his career averages. An official from the franchise revealed that Pant’s choice to step down as captain shortly after the season’s conclusion was not unexpected, as he had expressed a desire to relinquish the role due to the team’s disappointing performance.
Acknowledging that the vision he had for the team as captain was not materializing, Pant found it challenging to balance leadership responsibilities while maintaining his batting form. He emphasized the need to prioritize his batting, especially since his place in the Indian team for white-ball formats is not guaranteed. Pant’s decision was influenced by his belief that continuing as captain would be selfish after another unsatisfactory season, as well as his desire to address the complexities arising from multiple leadership perspectives within the team.
Pant’s commitment to maintaining high standards in his performance, whether as a batsman, wicketkeeper, or captain, led him to proactively address his concerns about his role with the coaching staff and management. The decision to step down was also driven by Pant’s sense of responsibility towards LSG fans, whom he felt he had let down as a leader. Ultimately, the franchise supported Pant’s choice to focus on his batting by relinquishing the captaincy.
