Former Indian cricketer Madan Lal has expressed his support for the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s (BCCI) directive to Kolkata Knight Riders (KKR) to release Bangladeshi cricketer Mustafizur Rahman before the IPL 2026 season. The decision, backed by thorough consultation according to BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia, follows concerns over Rahman’s involvement in the league amidst reports of violence against the Hindu community in Bangladesh.
Madan Lal emphasized the importance of considering public sentiment and potential government inputs in such matters. He highlighted the deep-rooted historical ties between India and Bangladesh, urging reflection on the tragic events affecting the Hindu community in Bangladesh. The cricketer’s remarks come in the wake of Rahman’s high-profile signing by KKR for a record Rs 9.20 crore in the December auction, sparking controversy and criticism.
Despite the absence of an official statement from KKR regarding the BCCI’s decision, it is expected that the franchise will adhere to the directive before the upcoming season commences. The controversy surrounding Rahman’s signing escalated further with public figures like spiritual teacher Devkinandan Thakur openly criticizing KKR and its co-owner, Shah Rukh Khan, for the move. Thakur highlighted the discontent among followers of Sanatan Dharma, particularly Hindus, over Rahman’s signing amid ongoing atrocities against Hindus in Bangladesh.
