Kolkata, July 29 (IANS) Madan Mitra, the maverick Trinamool Congress legislator from Kamarhati Assembly constituency, on Wednesday afternoon arrived at the Salt Lake office of the Enforcement Directorate (ED) to face interrogation in connection with the municipalities’ job case in West Bengal.

Last week, Madan Mitra’s two sons and his wife were also questioned by the ED officers in connection with the case.

Recently, Mitra, an old confidant of former West Bengal Chief Minister, Mamata Banerjee, had shifted to the rebel faction in the Trinamool Congress led by expelled party legislator, Ritabrata Banerjee.

Mitra arrived at the ED’s eastern regional office at the Central Government Office (CGO) complex at Salt Lake at around 12.30 p.m. Before entering the ED office, he told media persons that he was not related to any kind of financial corruption and he had appeared at the central agency office to fulfill his commitment of cooperating in the investigation process.

However, he refused to answer media queries on whether his decision to join the rebel faction was prompted by the ED’s notice for interrogation, as claimed by the leaders of the faction in Trinamool Congress led by Mamata Banerjee and her nephew, Abhishek Banerjee.

Sources aware of the development said that as per information gathered by the ED, the investigation arm of the Union Ministry of Finance, at least 125 individuals got jobs in Titagarh Municipality in North 24 Parganas district allegedly in exchange for cash or gold. Madan Mitra’s name surfaced from this source.

On June 13, the ED officials conducted raids and searches at Mitra’s two residences, one in Bhabanipur in South Kolkata and the other in Kamarhati on the northern outskirts of the city.

Mitra is a three‑time legislator from Kamarhati, first from 2011 to 2016 and subsequently from 2021 to date.

Simultaneous raids and search operations were also conducted in June at seven other places in and around the state capital.

In October 2025, the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) conducted a raid and search operation at Mitra’s residence in the same municipality recruitment irregularities case.

The CBI last week filed a chargesheet against former West Bengal Minister Sujit Bose and his son Samudra Bose in a special court under the Prevention of Money Laundering Act (PMLA) in Kolkata in connection with the ongoing probe.
