A day after the Madhya Pradesh Assembly approved the Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill, Chief Minister Mohan Yadav stood by the legislation, emphasizing its broad public backing and its goal of ensuring equal rights for all citizens. The Chief Minister addressed concerns raised by the opposition Congress, accusing the BJP of leveraging the UCC for political motives. Yadav, speaking in Indore, highlighted the extensive public consultations conducted by the state government before presenting the Bill in the Assembly.

“We engaged with over 3.5 crore individuals statewide, receiving approximately 10 lakh recommendations. This law has been formulated based on public feedback and is designed to secure equal rights for every individual,” Yadav stated. The UCC, according to Yadav, will unify aspects like marriage, divorce, maintenance, succession, and inheritance under a uniform legal framework applicable to all citizens, regardless of their faith.

Yadav stressed that the law will be equally applicable to Hindus, Muslims, Christians, Parsis, and other communities, aiming to establish equality before the law and safeguard the rights of every citizen. He tied the enactment of the UCC to the aspirations of India’s freedom fighters and credited the Modi-led government for advancing long-awaited reforms.

“I extend my congratulations to the people of Madhya Pradesh on the UCC Bill’s passage. Visionaries like Chandrashekhar Azad and Bhagat Singh envisioned an India where every individual would have equal opportunities and be governed by a single law. Under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s guidance, that vision is materializing,” the Chief Minister remarked. The Madhya Pradesh Assembly passed the UCC Bill following an extensive debate.

The ruling BJP hailed it as a significant reform aimed at ensuring uniform civil laws and gender equality, while the Congress criticized the legislation, alleging it was driven by the BJP’s ideological agenda and did not align with India’s diverse traditions. During his visit, CM Yadav inaugurated a section of the Lav Kush Level-2 Bridge in Indore, lauding the city’s ongoing infrastructure advancements and highlighting the double-decker bridge as a symbol of modern engineering.
