The Madhya Pradesh Legislative Assembly’s five-day monsoon session is scheduled to start on Monday, with expectations of intense debates between the ruling party and the opposition. The session, running until July 24, will feature the introduction of key Bills, including the Uniform Civil Code (UCC).

Approval for various legislative drafts, including the UCC, was granted during a cabinet meeting in Jagdishpur on Sunday. The upcoming session will also see the presentation of Bills such as amendments to the Private Universities Act, the Madhya Pradesh Fire and Emergency Services Bill, highway-related changes, and revisions to the Civil Defence Code. The opposition Congress has outlined its strategy to challenge the government on a range of issues, focusing on law and order, crime rates, unemployment, corruption, farmers’ concerns, crop damage, inflation, power shortages, and matters related to education and health.

Congress is particularly keen on seeking clarity on OBC reservation, pressing for answers regarding the promised 27% quota. The Assembly secretariat has reported a high number of submissions, with 1,756 notices for questions received since the notification, including 900 starred and 856 unstarred queries. Additionally, 267 ‘calling attention’ motions, five adjournment motions, 20 private member’s resolutions, and 77 ‘Zero Hour’ notices have been filed, indicating a potentially turbulent session ahead with the opposition gearing up to challenge the government on various fronts.

Assembly Speaker Narendra Singh Tomar inspected the House on Sunday to review preparations, ensuring the smooth conduct of proceedings. Accompanied by Principal Secretary Arvind Sharma, he examined the Central Hall. With the government focused on advancing its legislative agenda and the opposition intent on addressing public concerns, the upcoming monsoon session is expected to be highly contentious, possibly featuring the presentation of an adjunct budget.
