The Maharashtra State Agriculture Department has issued a critical advisory for farmers and citizens due to a forecast of turbulent weather conditions from March 17 to March 20. The Meteorological Department predicts overcast skies, thunderstorms, lightning, and high-velocity winds in regions like Vidarbha, Marathwada, Khandesh, and Central Maharashtra. The advisory highlights the likelihood of hailstorms, with peak intensity expected between March 18 and March 20.

With the Rabi harvest underway, farmers are urged to take precautionary measures such as protecting crops, planning, and ensuring safety to minimize potential losses. It is recommended that harvested crops be moved to secure storage or covered with waterproof materials to shield them from adverse weather conditions. Agricultural activities should be planned based on daily weather updates, with specific precautions advised to safeguard standing crops from hailstorms and squalls.

An official from the Agriculture Department emphasized the importance of prioritizing the safety of produce and staying informed about weather updates, especially concerning lightning and gusty winds. The current weather pattern is typical of the pre-monsoon transition period in Maharashtra, characterized by atmospheric instability resulting from the interaction of heat and moisture-laden winds.

During this critical period for crops like wheat, gram, and fruits, farmers are advised to promptly move harvested crops to covered storage areas, use protective materials if indoor storage is unavailable, and implement measures like hail protection nets and proper drainage in fields. Livestock should also be secured in sturdy shelters to prevent any harm.
