The Maharashtra Congress Legislature Party leader, Vijay Wadettiwar, stated that the party’s candidate, Akash More, is likely to withdraw his nomination from the Baramati bypoll. Wadettiwar mentioned that discussions among key leaders led to a consensus for the withdrawal, pending approval from the Central High Command.
The decision to withdraw comes as the deadline for withdrawal approaches, with 47 contestants, including NCP candidate Sunetra Pawar and Congress nominee Akash More, in the Baramati bypoll. This election follows the tragic passing of former Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar in a plane crash on January 28.
Following requests from various quarters, including Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar and NCP(SP) legislators, the Congress party is considering withdrawing its nominee to facilitate an unopposed election for Sunetra Pawar. Internal discussions within the Congress party and interactions with NCP(SP) Chief Sharad Pawar are ongoing.
Wadettiwar emphasized the local sentiment and the respect for Ajit Pawar, indicating a preference for an unopposed election. Despite the public announcement, an official decision is pending, reflecting a lack of coordination within the Congress party. High-level discussions are underway to finalize the withdrawal from Baramati.
Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge is engaged in discussions with senior leaders to navigate the withdrawal process. Wadettiwar reiterated the decision to step back, considering the prevailing circumstances and the sentiments expressed by various stakeholders.
