In a significant development for India’s digital infrastructure, Maharashtra has solidified its position as the prime destination for technology investments. Official data from the state Industries department and the Maharashtra Industrial Development Corporation (MIDC) revealed a total investment pipeline of Rs 16.69 lakh crore in the state’s data center portfolio. This portfolio encompasses 44 mega projects expected to create over 1,46,000 direct job opportunities and provide an IT capacity of nearly 23,800 MW.
Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis, leading a review meeting, highlighted Maharashtra’s rapid progress in the data center sector, positioning it as one of the leading data center investment hubs in the country. The state’s data center development strategy is divided between active construction projects and upcoming pipelines. Currently, 28 projects are under active construction, with committed capital of Rs 7.77 lakh crore, generating 99,325 jobs. Additionally, 16 projects are in the planning stage, accounting for Rs 8.91 lakh crore in capital pipeline and projected to create 46,830 future jobs.
The Industries department reported that Letters of Intent (LoIs) have been issued for 28 projects, representing 74% of the investment value. Moreover, the state has streamlined land acquisition processes to meet the massive infrastructure requirements, with 31,879 MW of capacity across 44 projects mapped to specific land needs. Geographically, the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) and surrounding areas are key focal points of this digital expansion, with hubs like Navi Mumbai and Taloja leading in investments.
Recognizing the resource-intensive nature of data centers, Maharashtra has conducted a thorough Water Availability and Infrastructure Assessment. The estimated water demand for these hubs is 856 MLD (Million Liters per Day), with 70.2% of the required water supply already active or in progress. By addressing regulatory clearances, land allotment, and infrastructure demands proactively, Maharashtra is establishing a robust ecosystem to support India’s cloud and artificial intelligence revolution.
