In a move to support women’s financial independence, the Maharashtra government has announced a significant expansion and restructuring of its Pink E-Rickshaw Scheme. The state has increased the financial subsidy for women from 20% to 40% of the total vehicle cost, making it more affordable for women to purchase Pink E-Rickshaws. Existing beneficiaries will also benefit from a retroactive increase in the government subsidy to 40%, reducing their outstanding loan burdens.
The scheme requires beneficiaries to contribute a minimum of 10% as self-financing, with the remaining balance covered through interest-free Partial Deferred Payment Facility or approved loans from various banks. Initially active in eight districts, the scheme is set to expand to more districts in Maharashtra. The subsidy distribution process has been centralized in Pune for transparency and efficiency.
The Minister for Women and Child Development has been granted authority to reallocate beneficiary targets district-wise to ensure a fair rollout. Administrative flexibility has been provided to modify the operational framework as needed to address future challenges. These updates aim to create sustainable employment opportunities for women and enable them to contribute to the state’s economic growth.
