The Maharashtra government has issued a resolution to legalize residential encroachments existing as of January 1, 2011, and used solely for residential purposes. This move aims to address housing issues for numerous impoverished families in the state. The decision covers the entire state, excluding Mumbai and Mumbai Suburban districts.
Residential encroachments up to 500 square feet will be regularized without any charges, while for larger areas, only 10% of the prevailing market value will be levied as the occupancy price. However, encroachments on specific areas like riverbeds, public roads, and reserved lands will not be regularized under any circumstances.
The government plans to offer alternative housing through the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana to families affected by these categories. Revenue Minister Chandrashekhar Bawankule emphasized the government’s commitment to ensuring no needy family in the state remains homeless.
The primary goal of this decision is to extend support to the most vulnerable in society, aligning with the ‘Housing for All’ policy and the ‘Developed Maharashtra 2047’ objective. Special committees, chaired by District Collectors and other officials, have been set up to oversee the implementation of this scheme, streamlining the decision-making process.
