Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis of Maharashtra expressed readiness for the state to spearhead advancements in the nuclear energy sector. He urged American companies to consider investing in Maharashtra, highlighting the increasing demand for stable power driven by Artificial Intelligence, data centers, and other technologies. Fadnavis emphasized the importance of nuclear power alongside renewable sources like solar and wind for sustained industrial growth.
Fadnavis made these statements during a meeting organized by the Nuclear Energy Institute (NEI) and the US-India Strategic Partnership Forum. Recently, the Maharashtra government signed Memorandums of Understanding (MoUs) for nuclear power projects with a total capacity of 25,400 MW. The Chief Minister underscored the global shift towards reliable baseload power to meet the demands of rapid industrialization and the digital economy.
Maharashtra, being a key industrial state in India with a substantial economy and significant Foreign Direct Investment (FDI), recognizes the critical role of nuclear energy in its power supply mix. Fadnavis highlighted the state’s focus on sectors like semiconductors, AI, and logistics that will drive up electricity demand. He also mentioned the positive developments in US-India civil nuclear cooperation and the potential for growth through technology transfer and industrial collaboration.
The Chief Minister outlined Maharashtra’s ambition to not just consume but also manufacture nuclear technology, aiming to become a hub for nuclear manufacturing and exports. He assured American companies of comprehensive support from the state government in terms of infrastructure, skilled manpower, and incentives for nuclear projects. Maharashtra is keen on embracing Small Modular Reactor (SMR) technology to meet future energy needs effectively.
