In a significant move to combat drought in Maharashtra, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis announced the state’s commitment to prioritize the Jal Jeevan Mission, Pradhan Mantri Krishi Sinchayee Yojana (PMKSY), and local water conservation initiatives. This decision came after a crucial meeting led by Union Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil, where Maharashtra’s requests for financial and infrastructural support for pending water projects were positively acknowledged by the Central government. Fadnavis emphasized the need for accelerated completion of ongoing irrigation projects under the PMKSY and secured assurances of substantial financial aid for this purpose.
Funding allocations will focus on projects that are between 50% to 75% and over 75% complete, with an estimated Rs 6,800 crore expected from the Central government to expedite these crucial water infrastructure schemes in Maharashtra. The state government, in collaboration with Central authorities, has already reviewed 90% of the projects to ensure transparency and quality execution. Fadnavis highlighted the meticulous verification processes at various administrative levels to rectify any identified gaps and enhance water sources for efficient implementation.
Despite Maharashtra hosting a significant portion of the nation’s dams, nearly half of the state is prone to drought conditions, presenting a unique challenge. Fadnavis stressed the importance of long-term water conservation strategies and public participation as sustainable solutions. The state aims to enhance initiatives like ‘Jal Tara’ and ‘Jalyukt Shivar’ by integrating Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funds and the Mahatma Gandhi National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA) to address water conservation effectively.
