Mali has unveiled a new Rapid Intervention Battalion within its armed forces to bolster the fight against terrorism. The unit aims to enhance the operational capabilities of the Malian Armed Forces, improve their responsiveness to security threats, and safeguard territorial integrity, civilians, and property. Equipped with mobile assets like motorcycles, the battalion can operate in areas inaccessible to armored vehicles. The move comes in response to a surge in attacks on fuel tankers, passenger transport, and civilian vehicles along crucial routes connecting the capital to other regions. Mali has been grappling with instability and insurgency since a military coup in March 2012, despite signing a peace agreement in 2015. The country recently faced a severe fuel shortage, impacting transportation, business activities, and daily life. Fuel sales in Bamako and nearby areas were rationed due to the crisis, with observers linking the shortage to Mali’s fragile security situation. The Group for the Support of Islam and Muslims (GSIM/JNIM) has been targeting fuel convoys, destroying dozens of tanker trucks in ambushes since September.
