A man has been apprehended in Haryana by Kolkata Police for engaging in online fraud. The individual, identified as Deepak Kumar from Jhajjar, Haryana, was tracked down following fraudulent activities associated with an APK file named ‘M Paribahan’. The arrest was made after an investigation into a fraud exceeding Rs 5 lakh.
Deepak Kumar was taken into custody after it was discovered that he had duped a person by falsely claiming that an e-Challan had been issued against the individual’s vehicle. Subsequently, Rs 60,000 was illicitly withdrawn from the victim’s account upon clicking a link provided by the accused. The police, using the app’s IP address, identified Deepak as the prime suspect, leading to his arrest.
Despite receiving multiple notices from the authorities, Deepak Kumar failed to provide satisfactory explanations and gave conflicting responses during police interrogation. Consequently, he was arrested by the Kolkata Police. The city has witnessed a surge in cyber fraud complaints, prompting the launch of additional sections by the police to investigate such cases effectively.
In response to the escalating cyber fraud incidents, Kolkata Police has introduced new measures, including a dedicated helpline and increased surveillance, to combat and prevent online crimes within the city.
