A 45-year-old man fell into a manhole on Khairani Road in Sakinaka, prompting Maharashtra Legislative Assembly Speaker Rahul Narwekar to emphasize the need for investigating a culpable homicide offense. The Speaker instructed the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation Commissioner to provide a detailed report on the incident by evening. BJP legislator Amit Satam demanded strict action in response to the incident.
Narwekar highlighted the seriousness of the situation, pointing out ongoing construction activities during the rainy season that have led to open manholes and dug-up roads. He stressed the importance of registering culpable homicide offenses in such cases. Forest Minister Ganesh Naik pledged government action in line with the Speaker’s instructions.
Amid heavy rainfall in Mumbai, the man fell into the manhole while reportedly talking on his mobile phone on Khairani Road. His belongings were found at the scene, triggering a search operation involving the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, and emergency services. The man, identified as Aslam Ansari, was swept away by stormwater after falling into the deep manhole.
A rescue operation, including the Mumbai Fire Brigade, police, ambulance services, and civic officials, was launched to locate the victim. This incident follows a recent case where a municipal worker fell into a manhole during an inspection by Mumbai Mayor Ritu Tawde. Authorities are investigating the safety lapses of the private contractor responsible for the maintenance work.
