Imphal, July 30 (IANS) Assam Rifles, reinforcing its commitment to youth empowerment, sports promotion, and community welfare, organised a series of civic support programs and civil-security interaction meetings across Manipur’s Chandel, Bishnupur, and Ukhrul districts, officials said on Thursday.

A senior official explained the provisions of the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) in notified disturbed areas, stating that the Act provides the legal framework for security forces to conduct counter-insurgency operations and assist the civil administration in maintaining public order. He reiterated that all operations are carried out strictly within the law, with professionalism, restraint and respect for citizens’ rights and dignity.

A defence spokesman said the initiatives, held on Wednesday and Thursday, aimed to nurture sporting talent, strengthen cooperation between security forces and communities, counter misinformation and address developmental concerns to promote lasting peace.

In Chandel district, Assam Rifles extended financial assistance and essential supplies to the Cheengkhu Youth & Cultural Club to support its participation in the State-level Volleyball Championship at Khuman Lampak Sports Complex in Imphal West from August 1 to 5. The force provided ration items including wheat flour, pulses, sugar, tea, edible oil, ragi, jowar, bajra, salt and coffee. Club members expressed gratitude for the support.

In Bishnupur district, a security meeting was held at Wainem village under the Company Operating Base at Irengbam, attended by 57 villagers including the chairman, 34 men and 22 women. Issues discussed included road connectivity, agriculture, education, employment and welfare schemes. Assam Rifles personnel briefed villagers on communal harmony, prevention of anti-social activities and drug abuse, timely sharing of information and responsible use of social media.

Meanwhile, a security interaction meeting was organised at Shangshak Garrison in Ukhrul district on July 29, attended by 33 representatives including village headmen, civil society members and student leaders. Discussions focused on strengthening coordination between security forces and the local population, encouraging cooperation in preserving peace and promoting responsible participation in law and order.

Representatives appreciated the outreach efforts and expressed willingness to continue supporting initiatives for peace, security and welfare in the region.
