The mortal remains of Manipur BJP MLA Vungzagin Valte, a veteran tribal leader, will be laid to rest in Churachandpur district on Saturday, 134 days after he passed away due to injuries sustained during ethnic violence in the state. Valte, a 62-year-old BJP leader from the Zomi tribal community, had been receiving medical treatment in Delhi after being attacked during the violence in Imphal on May 4, 2023. Following his death on February 21, his body has been kept at the Churachandpur District Hospital.
Valte, a three-time legislator from the Thanlon Assembly constituency, was brutally attacked in Imphal, leaving him with severe injuries and partial paralysis. He was later airlifted to Delhi for advanced medical care, where he succumbed to his injuries. The Zomi Council has announced that Valte will be buried at a cemetery in Dorcas Veng village in Churachandpur district on Saturday afternoon.
The Zomi Council has urged the Union Government to expedite the CBI probe into the attack on Valte. They emphasized that justice has not been served to the late legislator, who was a respected figure among the tribal communities in Manipur. The ongoing ethnic violence in Manipur has claimed the lives of at least 260 people and displaced thousands since May 2023, primarily between the valley-based Meiteis and the tribal Kuki-Zo communities.
