The Manipur government has declared a compensation of Rs 10 lakh for the family of Mayanglambam Rishikanta Singh, who was abducted and murdered by suspected United Kuki National Army (UKNA) militants in Churachandpur district. Singh, also known as Ginminthang, was taken from his home along with his wife on January 21 and later found dead in Natjang village on January 22. The UKNA, not part of the Suspension of Operations (SoO) agreement, was involved in the incident.
Commissioner-cum-Secretary (Home) N. Ashok Kumar expressed the government’s condolences and announced the ex gratia for Singh’s next of kin. Singh, a Meitei, was married to Chingnu Haokip from the Kuki tribal community and had taken the name Ginminthang post-marriage. The case has been transferred to the National Investigation Agency (NIA) for a thorough investigation.
A Joint Action Committee, led by Congress Lok Sabha MP Angomcha Bimol Akoijam and other Congress members, met Governor Ajay Kumar Bhalla to discuss the matter. The Governor assured that the NIA is handling the case and intensive operations are ongoing to bring the culprits to justice. The BJP, COCOMI, and various organizations have condemned the killing and demanded strict actions against the perpetrators.
