Maruti Suzuki India Limited marked World Environment Day by announcing two significant biogas projects with a total investment of Rs 150 crore. The company plans to set up a new biogas plant at its Kharkhoda facility in Haryana, capable of processing 10 tonnes per day. This initiative aligns with the government’s ‘Waste-to-Wealth’ mission, emphasizing renewable energy solutions and reduced reliance on fossil fuels.
The upcoming biogas plant at Kharkhoda is anticipated to cut around 9,490 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions annually and meet nearly 20% of the facility’s gas requirements. Maruti Suzuki has also expanded its existing biogas plant at the Manesar facility from 0.2 TPD to 0.7 TPD. This expansion is expected to generate approximately 3.6 lakh standard cubic meters of biogas yearly, helping avoid about 664 tonnes of CO2 emissions annually.
Maruti Suzuki’s Managing Director and CEO, Hisashi Takeuchi, highlighted the company’s commitment to reducing fossil fuel consumption and imported oil dependence. The biogas projects are seen as crucial steps towards sustainable manufacturing and clean energy adoption, contributing to the national priority of reducing reliance on fossil fuels. The Manesar plant utilizes anaerobic digestion technology, converting agricultural and organic waste into biogas for various operational needs.
