At least 20 people lost their lives, and many others were injured in a major fire that erupted at the multi-storied Lemon Green Restaurant in Delhi’s Malviya Nagar on Wednesday morning. Authorities reported that 37 individuals have been rescued and taken to the hospital, with efforts ongoing to locate more survivors.
Some individuals resorted to jumping from the upper floors of the building to escape the blaze. The injured have been swiftly transferred to a nearby hospital, with several in critical condition. Senior officials from Delhi Police, Delhi Fire Services, and rescue teams are on-site, overseeing the situation closely.
Upon receiving the alert, ten fire tenders were promptly dispatched to the scene, successfully containing the fire. Nevertheless, the incident caused substantial damage. SDM Jitender Kumar, addressing reporters, mentioned that the fire likely originated in the restaurant operating in the building’s basement, although the exact cause remains under investigation.
Search and rescue operations are currently in progress at the site, with officials striving to locate any individuals potentially trapped on various floors of the structure. SDM Kumar emphasized the necessity of stringent action against violators of safety regulations, pledging to ensure accountability for unauthorized activities conducted under the guise of permissions.
