Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) chief Mayawati expressed her backing for the Women’s Reservation Bill, advocating for increased representation of women in legislative bodies. She emphasized the necessity for stronger protections for marginalized communities during a press conference. Mayawati highlighted the ongoing atrocities and oppression faced by women, urging for 50% reservation for women from all communities based on population.

Mayawati welcomed the progress towards providing 33% reservation to women in Parliament and state legislative assemblies. She acknowledged the delayed implementation but commended the initiative to move forward with the process. Stressing the importance of inclusion, she suggested that separate reservations for SC, ST, and OBC women would make the bill more significant and historic.

As the Centre moves forward with the Women’s Reservation Constitutional Amendment Bill, Mayawati’s remarks align with the current push for gender equality in political representation. The proposed amendment aims to ensure 33% reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and state assemblies, with a special parliamentary session scheduled for this purpose. The bill, originally passed in 2023, has faced delays due to procedural issues related to delimitation and census requirements.
