Meghalaya Chief Minister, Conrad K. Sangma, launched a new set of police vehicles in Shillong to enhance the state police force’s operational readiness and emergency response capabilities. The event took place at the Police Officers’ Mess at Golflink in the presence of Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang, along with senior government officials and police personnel. A total of 95 vehicles have been acquired for the Meghalaya Police, with 79 vehicles funded by the Central Assistance to State Police Scheme of the Government of India.
The newly introduced fleet comprises various vehicles including Maruti Jimny vehicles, Tata truck troop carriers, Mahindra mini trucks, buses with different seating capacities, and Tata Yodha vehicles for the CID wing. The procurement, valued at around Rs 30 crore, is anticipated to significantly boost police mobility, operational efficiency, and emergency response throughout the state. Meghalaya Chief Minister emphasized the importance of maintaining law and order as a critical government responsibility and reaffirmed the administration’s dedication to enhancing the police force through ongoing reforms and investments.
Sangma highlighted the government’s focus on police modernization and initiatives like the Police Reserve Fund to enhance infrastructure and administrative effectiveness at the grassroots level. He mentioned the renovation and upgrade of infrastructure, delegation of authority, and recruitment of over 3,000 personnel to address long-standing vacancies as steps towards strengthening the force. The Chief Minister commended the Meghalaya Police for their role in maintaining peace during recent tensions in Lapangap in West Jaintia Hills and praised their professionalism in upholding law and order across the state.
