Meghalaya Education Minister Lahkmen Rymbui announced that the state has shown progress in school education by advancing two grades in the Union government’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) 2.0 for 2025-26.
The state’s overall PGI score has risen from 448 in 2024-25 to 525.7 in 2025-26, leading Meghalaya to move from the lowest performance band, Akanshi-3, to Akanshi-1 in a single assessment cycle.
Rymbui highlighted that this is the first time Meghalaya has moved out of the lowest grading category since the inception of the Performance Grading Index framework by the Union government.
The state has shown consistent progress over the past four assessment cycles, with the overall score increasing from 401.62 in 2022-23 to 525.7 in 2025-26, reflecting a cumulative improvement of more than 124 points due to sustained efforts by the state government to enhance the school education system.
The Education Minister credited the state’s improved performance to various reforms implemented in recent years, including the Structured Pay Framework (SPF) for teachers, school rationalization, the Chief Minister’s IMPACT program, infrastructure development under the Samagra Shiksha scheme, and the Asian Development Bank-supported education project.
Rymbui emphasized that the state has also concentrated on enhancing teacher capacity through the Meghalaya Teacher Training Academy, promoting digital governance in the education sector, and introducing targeted interventions to improve foundational literacy, numeracy, and overall school governance.
He noted that the rise in the PGI ranking signifies the positive outcomes of these reforms and underscores the collaborative efforts of teachers, education officials, school management committees, and other stakeholders across Meghalaya.
Expressing satisfaction with the progress, the Minister stated that the state government views this achievement as a significant milestone on the path to further enhancing learning outcomes, governance, teacher capacity, and ensuring quality education access for all children in Meghalaya.
