The J&K Anti-Corruption Bureau apprehended a meter reader from the electric department in Rajouri district for taking a bribe of Rs 30,000. The accused, identified as Arif Iqbal, was caught red-handed while receiving the bribe to manipulate an inflated electricity bill. A case has been filed against him under Section 7 of the Prevention of Corruption Act, 1988.
The complainant, who ran a tyre shop until 2021, alleged that the meter reader demanded Rs 50,000 to alter the bill, which was later reduced to Rs 30,000. Refusing to comply, the complainant reported the incident to the ACB Rajouri, leading to the arrest of the accused. Following the arrest, searches were conducted at the meter reader’s residence in Rajouri as part of the ongoing investigation.
The ACB’s trap team successfully captured the meter reader in the act of soliciting and accepting the bribe. The accused was taken into custody immediately, and further inquiries are being conducted to delve deeper into the matter. The ACB spokesperson confirmed that the investigation is ongoing to uncover any additional details related to the case.
