Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum has restated her government’s dedication to providing humanitarian assistance to Cuba, emphasizing the challenging circumstances faced by the island nation that necessitate international solidarity. Sheinbaum, speaking at a daily press briefing, assured ongoing support to Cuba, citing the enduring bond of solidarity between the two countries. She expressed Mexico’s determination to offer various forms of aid to Cuba, especially in light of the prolonged blockade imposed by the United States.
Mexico is committed to extending assistance to Cuba to the fullest extent possible, with Sheinbaum underscoring the importance of solidarity in aiding a country in need. She highlighted Mexico’s historical tradition of offering support and reiterated the nation’s resolve to continue this assistance to Cuba. She emphasized that Mexico stands by Cuba during these challenging times, particularly as the US intensifies its decades-long embargo against the island nation.
President Sheinbaum previously defended the principle of self-determination and criticized the US government’s decision to press charges against former Cuban leader Raul Castro. She questioned the timing of the accusations, given the passage of three decades since the alleged events. The US Department of Justice recently indicted Castro for his alleged involvement in the downing of two aircraft belonging to the Cuban-American exile group Brothers to the Rescue in 1996.
Sheinbaum highlighted the historical context of US-Cuba relations, noting the US tendency to use drug trafficking as a pretext for intervention. She emphasized Mexico’s stance of cooperation with the US while maintaining a respectful approach that prioritizes mutual interests and constructive bilateral ties. She stressed the importance of historical awareness in guiding Mexico’s interactions with the United States, advocating for cooperation while safeguarding the interests of both nations.
