Militant activity in Pakistan has escalated significantly in recent years, with a notable increase in attacks by the Tehreek-e-Taliban Pakistan (TTP) occurring nationwide, particularly in border regions and former tribal areas. The surge in TTP attacks has been linked to the Taliban’s takeover in Afghanistan in 2021, leading to a spike of nearly 70% in militant assaults on Pakistani security forces and civilians, according to recent assessments.
Security experts highlighted the TTP as a major internal security threat for Pakistan, particularly in the former tribal districts along the Afghanistan border. The TTP has been responsible for multiple attacks in Pakistan following the breakdown of peace talks between the two sides in 2022.
Pakistan has accused the TTP of using Afghan territory for their operations and has urged the Taliban to prevent such activities targeting neighboring countries. However, the Taliban has consistently refuted these accusations, emphasizing their stance against allowing any group to pose threats to other nations.
In a recent incident, an improvised explosive device (IED) blast targeted a cement factory vehicle in Pakistan’s Khyber Pakhtunkhwa province, resulting in one fatality and nine injuries. The explosion occurred in Lakki Marwat district, with the deceased identified as Fareedullah and the injured individuals including Mir Ahmad, Abdul Malik, Umar Khan, Masal Khan, and Syed Jan, as reported by local media.
The attack took place amidst a series of assaults on law enforcement personnel in Pakistan, particularly in the border regions of Balochistan and Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. This incident followed the killing of four policemen in separate firing incidents in Lakki Marwat and Bannu districts of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. In Lakki Marwat’s Sarai Naurang city, three police personnel lost their lives after unidentified assailants on a motorcycle opened fire on traffic police officers, resulting in the deaths of Traffic Police In-charge Naurang Jalal Khan, Constable Azizullah, and Constable Abdullah. An investigation into the incident has been initiated by the police.
