Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare, Anupriya Patel, expressed her backing for the Women’s Reservation Bill in the Lok Sabha, highlighting the anticipation among Indian women for a significant decision. Patel emphasized the need for the long-pending legislation to be enacted, pointing out the insufficient representation of women in political bodies.

She underscored the low percentage of women in legislative bodies, noting that only 14% participate in the Lok Sabha and 18% in the Rajya Sabha, with state assemblies showing even lower figures. Patel criticized the prevalent trend of prioritizing ‘bahubalis’ and criminals over ordinary women in candidate selection, calling for a shift in this practice.

Addressing concerns raised during the debate, Patel stressed the importance of collective support for the Women’s Reservation Bill. She refuted objections from the Opposition, asserting that the proposed increase in seats would not adversely affect any state’s representation. The Minister also urged all parties to unite in passing the bill for the benefit of the nation’s female population.
