The Ministry of Ports, Shipping, and Waterways is intensifying its monitoring of the maritime security situation in the Persian Gulf. Precautionary measures have been bolstered to protect Indian-flagged vessels and seafarers in the region. Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal led a review meeting to evaluate the security environment in the Persian Gulf and its impact on Indian maritime assets and personnel.
The Director General of Shipping provided an overview of the current situation in the region and the status of Indian-flagged ships and seafarers during the meeting. Sonowal emphasized the continuous vigilance being maintained and the activation of necessary precautionary, monitoring, and coordination mechanisms to ensure the safety of seafarers and maritime assets. The ministry is in constant communication with relevant national and international agencies to respond promptly to any emerging developments.
To facilitate swift coordination and assistance, a dedicated Quick Response Team has been established. Helpline numbers have been activated and shared with seafarers’ families through recruitment and placement service licensees. Enhanced monitoring and security oversight for Indian seafarers and vessels have been activated in response to reported threats in the Persian Gulf and surrounding areas.
The Ministry, through the Directorate General of Shipping, has implemented real-time tracking of Indian-flagged vessels and established 24×7 monitoring. Mandatory reporting protocols have been set for vessels, owners, and managers. Close coordination is being maintained with the Indian Navy, Ministry of External Affairs, and other relevant agencies to ensure the safety and well-being of seafarers and Indian-flagged ships.
