Olympic medallist Mirabai Chanu made history in Indian weightlifting by securing the women’s 48kg title at the Commonwealth Games 2026 in Glasgow. This victory marked her third consecutive gold medal at the Commonwealth Games, solidifying her status as one of India’s top weightlifters. Mirabai set new Games and Commonwealth snatch records during the competition.
Despite a challenging start where she missed her first attempt at 82kg snatch, Mirabai rallied and successfully lifted the weight on her second try. She then went on to lift 85kg on her final attempt, setting new records at the Commonwealth Games and in the Commonwealth. Mirabai also took an eight-kilogram lead in the clean and jerk category, securing the gold medal well before the event concluded.
Earlier in the day, India added to its medal tally as Rishikanta Singh Chanambam claimed a silver medal in the men’s 60kg event. Rishikanta surpassed the Commonwealth Games snatch record by lifting 121kg and lifted 143kg in the clean and jerk, totaling 264kg for the silver medal. Malaysia’s Bin Kasdan Mohamad Aniq clinched the gold with a total weight of 273kg, a new Commonwealth Games record.
