Aizawl, Aug 17 (IANS) Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on Monday said the Mizo Hmeichhe Insuihkhawm Pawl (MHIP), an influential women’s organisation in the state, played a crucial role in the enactment of the Mizo Marriage, Divorce and Inheritance of Property Act, 2014.

The Chief Minister made the remarks after laying the foundation stone for the new MHIP General Headquarters building in Aizawl.

He said that in recognition of the organisation’s exemplary work, the MHIP received the Nari Shakti Puraskar award from the Union Ministry of Women and Child Development in 2016.

Lalduhoma added that the organisation’s initiatives have brought considerable comfort and relief to women and children across the state.

He noted that as the only major non‑governmental organisation (NGO) dedicated specifically to the welfare of women and children, and having been established with government support, it is appropriate for the government to continue extending assistance to the organisation to the maximum possible extent.

The Chief Minister said MHIP and other voluntary organisations are key pillars of society, guiding younger generations and serving as important social institutions. Therefore, the government considers it appropriate for such organisations to have suitable and dignified facilities.

Looking ahead, Lalduhoma encouraged the MHIP to become self‑sustaining by generating its own revenue so it can manage its organisation and facilities stably. He noted that the government is also taking steps to support other NGOs.

A large Convention Centre is being constructed under Swadesh Darshan 2.0 on land belonging to the Young Mizo Association (YMA) at Thingsulthliah, he said. Lalduhoma also highlighted that Working Women’s Hostels are currently under construction at seven different locations in the state as part of efforts to support the welfare and well‑being of women.

Emphasising the need to implement development projects efficiently and expeditiously, the Chief Minister explained that under the newly introduced Financial Advisory System, substantial financial powers have been delegated to Department Secretaries to expedite the implementation of various projects.

Regarding funds received under the Special Assistance to States for Capital Investment (SASCI), which are allocated afresh every year, he highlighted that previous projects must first be completed and their accounts settled before new funds can be utilised.

He called for strengthened cooperation and coordination among all stakeholders to ensure that development projects are implemented smoothly and within the stipulated time.

Lalduhoma also urged the MHIP to closely monitor the construction of its new headquarters building from start to finish to ensure the work is executed to a high standard.

The old MHIP General Headquarters building was first occupied on April 20, 1993. The new building will be constructed at the same location at an estimated cost of Rs 3.70 crore. The project is being funded under SASCI 2025‑26.

Established on July 6, 1974, the MHIP is the largest women’s voluntary non‑governmental organisation in Mizoram, dedicated to women’s empowerment, social welfare and community development.
