After being officially recognized as the ‘Ginger Capital of India’ by NITI Aayog, Mizoram’s Chief Minister Lalduhoma praised the state’s farmers for their hard work and innovation in transforming ginger cultivation into a significant agricultural success story. The Chief Minister inaugurated a Ginger Processing Unit at the Sairang Horticulture Centre, emphasizing the newfound recognition for Mizoram’s agricultural prowess.
Acknowledging the potential of passion fruit, the Chief Minister expressed plans to promote it on a larger scale alongside ginger cultivation. He highlighted the positive impact of ginger farming on family incomes, purchasing power, and moral values, emphasizing the value of earning through hard work. Additionally, he announced the resumption of ginger procurement from February 2 and the provision of locally-produced machines at collection centers to aid farmers in ginger processing.
Emphasizing the competitive advantage of organic farming in Mizoram, the Chief Minister pledged increased government support for organic practices. He addressed irregularities in last year’s ginger procurement, promising transparency and fairness in all processes. Farmers were urged to utilize collection centers for systematic procurement and officials were reminded to uphold their responsibilities diligently.
The recent declaration by NITI Aayog solidifies Mizoram’s reputation for high-quality ginger production and rapid growth in the sector. According to the Mizoram Agricultural Marketing Board’s annual report, over 3.38 crore kg of ginger was procured in 2025, with the entire support price of Rs 137.72 crore disbursed to farmers.
