Mizoram Governor General (Dr) V.K. Singh (Retd) initiated the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’, a nationwide effort by the Union Ministry of Agriculture and Farmers’ Welfare to combat soil degradation and promote natural farming practices. The campaign aims to boost soil health, enhance agricultural productivity, and advocate sustainable farming by reducing the excessive use of chemical fertilisers. Governor Singh expressed concern over the negative impact of chemical fertilisers on agricultural land and human health, stressing the importance of preserving farmland.
Addressing a gathering in Aizawl, the Governor highlighted the need to transition towards natural farming practices to safeguard the environment and improve agricultural produce quality. He emphasized the significance of soil testing to ensure crops receive adequate nutrition and called for support from agricultural experts to guide farmers. With a focus on achieving self-sufficiency in food production and increasing farmers’ income, Mizoram aims to leverage expertise from agricultural scientists and Krishi Vigyan Kendras (KVKs).
Governor Singh emphasized the unique challenges faced by Mizoram’s agriculture sector, particularly with ‘jhum’ cultivation on hilly slopes. He urged continuous training of farmers in modern techniques, strengthening market connections, and producing high-value organic crops. Dr. Anupam Mishra from the Central Agricultural University (CAU) stressed the importance of reducing energy consumption in foodgrain production and creating awareness about central government schemes through the ‘Khet Bachao Abhiyan’. The campaign will also focus on sustainable farming methods and improving soil health to help farmers benefit from government programs.
