Mizoram Police have been actively combating drug-related crimes, registering 538 cases and apprehending 795 individuals, including women and Myanmar nationals, in the last 18 months. The state’s intensified efforts against narcotics have led to 319 cases and 483 arrests in 2025, with an additional 219 cases and 312 arrests in the first half of 2026. Authorities attribute the rise in cases to a change in trafficking methods, with smaller but more frequent drug transports being detected due to improved enforcement measures.

The Mizoram State Core Committee on Fight Against Drugs, led by Chief Minister Lalduhoma, recently reviewed the state’s anti-drug initiatives. The committee, including Home Minister K. Sapdanga and Excise and Narcotics Minister Lalnghinglova Hmar, acknowledged the progress made in curbing drug abuse and trafficking. The government’s sustained actions have shown promising results, although the fight against drugs is an ongoing challenge.

Various departments and organizations, such as the Excise & Narcotics Department, Police Department, Social Welfare Department, and the Young Mizo Association (YMA), presented updates during the committee meeting. Reports indicated a significant decrease in illicit drug availability following Operation Jericho, leading to higher street prices. Additionally, efforts at the Hulhhliap Short Stay Centre have resulted in 30% of beneficiaries successfully overcoming drug addiction through skill development courses and rehabilitation services.

The YMA highlighted its anti-drug initiatives, emphasizing the importance of community support in combating substance abuse. While heroin availability has declined, cannabis use and cough syrup abuse have risen, underscoring the need for targeted awareness campaigns, especially among youth. The committee also discussed plans to strengthen drug control laws in Mizoram and enhance local anti-drug committees to tackle the trafficking challenges posed by the state’s proximity to international borders.
