Railway connectivity in Mizoram reached a significant milestone as the Bharat Gaurav Deluxe AC tourist train arrived at Sairang railway station for the first time. This train, part of the ‘North East Discovery’ circuit, brought 81 tourists from various parts of India, the United States, and Nepal to Mizoram, highlighting the state’s growing prominence in the tourism sector. The inauguration of the Bairabi-Sairang Railway Line by Prime Minister Narendra Modi in September 2025 has led to a surge in tourism in Mizoram over the past six months.
The improved accessibility due to the new railway line has attracted a mix of domestic and international visitors, fostering employment opportunities in the hospitality industry and promoting eco-tourism and cultural experiences in Mizoram. The increased connectivity has positioned Mizoram as an emerging tourist destination in the Northeast, aligning with the vision of inclusive growth and regional integration. Since the launch of train services on the Bairabi-Sairang route, there has been overwhelming public support, with high occupancy rates on various train services to and from Sairang.
Recently, on February 9, 2026, a new train service connecting Sairang to Silchar in southern Assam was inaugurated by Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw, further enhancing regional mobility and linking Mizoram with the vital educational, medical, and commercial hub of the Barak Valley in Assam. The freight operations on the Bairabi-Sairang section have also gained momentum post-inauguration, with the successful movement of various freight consignments, including cement, sand, stone chips, essential commodities, and automobiles to Sairang.
The North Frontier Railway (NFR) is committed to strengthening rail infrastructure, improving service quality, and expanding both passenger and freight operations in the region to support inclusive growth and long-term socio-economic development in Mizoram and the broader Northeast region.
