Several districts in south Bengal, including Kolkata, experienced moderate rain, thunderstorms, and lightning from Monday night, with overcast conditions persisting into Tuesday morning, as reported by the Meteorological Department. The skies have remained overcast, with scattered rain in various places.
The Regional Meteorological Centre in Kolkata’s Alipore has predicted further rainfall for the day and Wednesday, with a likelihood of rain across the entire West Bengal. An ‘Orange Alert’ has been issued for seven districts in South Bengal due to the weather conditions.
In addition to rain, gusty winds blowing at speeds of 50 to 60 km per hour may occur in isolated areas. A ‘Yellow Alert’ has been issued for Kolkata and the rest of South Bengal, with gusty winds of 40 to 50 km per hour expected in Kolkata. Heavy rain is forecasted for Darjeeling, Jalpaiguri, and Alipurduar districts in north Bengal, with the rainy weather expected to persist in South Bengal districts until Thursday. Temperatures are likely to rise by 3 to 4 degrees Celsius thereafter.
According to a Meteorological Department official, an east-west trough extending from North-East Bihar to Manipur, passing over northern Bangladesh, Meghalaya, and South-East Assam, along with another active trough from Bihar through Jharkhand to Gangetic West Bengal, is causing the stormy weather. The official mentioned that due to substantial moisture influx from the Bay of Bengal and favorable wind patterns, stormy weather accompanied by lightning is expected to intensify.
The sky is expected to remain overcast throughout Tuesday, with a likelihood of storms, rain, and gusty winds in the afternoon. The maximum and minimum temperatures are expected to be around 32 degrees Celsius and 25 degrees Celsius, respectively. A drizzle has begun in the Bankura district since Tuesday morning, while intermittent rain since Monday evening has helped lower temperatures in various places.
