The Surfing Federation of India revealed the launch of India’s 2026 surfing season opener, the Little Andaman Pro 2026 – National Surf & SUP Championship, set to occur from April 9-12. This event will kick off an exciting season of Indian surfing just before India’s participation in the Asian Games 2026 in Japan. The championship, spanning four days, will witness top Indian surfers and stand-up paddlers competing for top honors at Butler Bay Beach in the Andaman Islands.
Presented by Andaman and Nicobar Tourism and organized by the Surfing Federation of India, the event will gather elite surfers from all over India to compete in the Senior Division across Surfing and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP) disciplines. TT group has joined as the official sponsor for the Surfing Federation of India. India secured its first-ever Asian Games quota at the 2024 Asian Surfing Championships and continued its success in the 2025 edition, earning four slots for the 2026 Asian Games in Japan.
“This is a significant moment for Indian surfing. Starting the national season at a premier location like Little Andaman before the Asian Games demonstrates our commitment to expanding the sport across India. We aim to provide more competition opportunities to our talented athletes in diverse conditions, crucial for their international growth,” said Arun Vasu, President of the Surfing Federation of India. Vasu emphasized the progress of Indian surfers on the global stage, attributing it to structured competition and grassroots development efforts.
The Little Andaman Pro 2026 will be held at Butler Bay, known for its exceptional surf conditions. The reef break at Butler Bay offers long, clean waves, enabling surfers to showcase technical skills and extended rides, ideal for high-performance contests. Competing in reef conditions will offer Indian surfers a chance to enhance their technical abilities and gain valuable experience. Such events play a vital role in nurturing national talent and preparing athletes for international competitions.
The championship not only focuses on competition but also aims to promote the Andaman Islands as a future surfing and ocean sports hub in India. With its pristine waters, coral reefs, and consistent waves, Little Andaman is attracting attention from surfers and adventure tourism enthusiasts. The initiative is expected to encourage local youth participation and contribute to sustainable development through sports. Indian surfers have been making strides on the global stage, achieving notable results at the Asian Surfing Championships and showcasing growing competitiveness against established surfing nations in Asia.
The Surfing Federation of India has unveiled an expanded 2026 Annual Competition Calendar for Surf and Stand-Up Paddle (SUP), featuring more events nationwide than ever before. The national circuit will include various stops throughout the year, starting with early-season competitions like the Mumbai SUP Championship in January. Subsequent events from April onwards will include stops in Little Andaman, traditional surf spots in Karnataka and Tamil Nadu, and additional legs scheduled across the mid-year and post-monsoon periods. The 2026 season will introduce the Longboarding Division in the national competition circuit, providing opportunities for athletes specializing in classic surfing styles and traditional wave riding techniques.
