Mohun Bagan Super Giant encountered a setback in the Indian Super League title race following a 1-1 draw with FC Goa at the Fatorda Stadium on Saturday evening. This outcome pushed the Mariners to second place, trailing East Bengal on goal difference. Both teams were wary of the challenging weather conditions in Goa as the 5 PM kick-off raised concerns about the oppressive heat and humidity. Fortunately, overcast skies and intermittent rain provided better playing conditions, allowing for a lively match.
The initial half of the game saw a close contest between the two teams. Despite utilizing only two foreign players, Goa matched Mohun Bagan’s intensity and organization. While neither side could establish full control, both displayed moments of promise. Mohun Bagan had the first clear opportunity right after the break when Liston Colaco delivered a dangerous pass from the left flank to Jason Cummings, but Goa’s goalkeeper, Hrithik Tiwari, thwarted the striker’s shot.
In response, Goa swiftly created a threatening set-piece scenario. A well-placed delivery from Sandesh Jhingan caused chaos in the Mohun Bagan penalty area, leading to a chance for Dejan Drazic whose shot was expertly blocked by Tom Aldred. The breakthrough moment arrived in the 55th minute due to a defensive error by Goa. Jhingan’s mishandling of a loose backpass in his own half allowed Jamie Maclaren to capitalize, putting Mohun Bagan in the lead with a composed finish.
However, Goa managed to secure an impressive equalizer in the 67th minute. Substitute Ronny Wilson received the ball from Drazic on the right flank and attempted a cross that ended up curling perfectly into the far corner, leaving Vishal Kaith surprised. Mohun Bagan had a late opportunity to secure a victory when Sahal Abdul Samad delivered a low cross to Cummings during a swift counterattack, but the Australian forward’s shot sailed over the bar.
Apart from the dropped points, concerns are mounting over Brazilian winger Robson Robinho’s performance. Despite a strong showing against Mohammedan Sporting and a goal against NorthEast United FC, Robinho has struggled to consistently influence matches in his debut season. This inconsistency has reignited discussions about Mohun Bagan’s attacking strategy, particularly the tactical changes made by coach Sergio Lobera this season.
Interestingly, Mohun Bagan appeared more threatening after reverting to their previous system in the second half. With Robinho substituted, Manvir returned to the right wing, and Liston resumed his natural position on the left, leading to an immediate improvement in the visitors’ attacking play. The extended 19-day break before the match seemed to have dulled Mohun Bagan’s sharpness, having not played since their April 19 fixture against NorthEast United due to scheduling conflicts related to elections in West Bengal.
Now tied on points with East Bengal and with the Kolkata derby approaching on May 17, Mohun Bagan faces a critical final stretch of the season where they can ill-afford another setback.
