Mongolia’s new coalition government, led by Prime Minister Nyam-Osor Uchral of the Mongolian People’s Party, was sworn in at the State Palace in Ulan Bator. The coalition includes the MPP, the opposition Hun Party, and the National Coalition, with a total of 19 ministers and 16 ministries. Uchral announced that his government comprises 19 members, with 16 ministers from the MPP, two from the Human Rights Party, and one from the National Alliance.
The political transition occurred following the resignation of former Prime Minister Gombojav Zandanshatar, who stepped down last week. Reports suggest his resignation was due to internal party disagreements or in accordance with the tradition that the ruling party’s chairman also serves as Prime Minister. In the 2024 parliamentary elections, the MPP secured a narrow majority with 68 out of 126 seats, while the Hun Party and the National Coalition won eight and four seats, respectively.
Sandag Byambatsogt was elected as the new speaker of Mongolia’s State Great Hural, the unicameral parliament, during a session where 114 lawmakers were present. Byambatsogt, aged 51, has been elected to parliament five times and has held various government roles, including minister of justice and internal affairs, minister of road and transport development, minister of defence, and head of the cabinet secretariat.
