Muhammad Yunus, the Chief Advisor of the interim government in Bangladesh, expressed deep sorrow over the death of Khaleda Zia, the country’s first woman Prime Minister. Zia, a three-time Prime Minister and Chairperson of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP), passed away at the age of 80 after battling a prolonged illness. Yunus described her as a great guardian, emphasizing her significant role in the nation’s history.
With the passing of Khaleda Zia, Yunus highlighted the loss of a remarkable figure who not only led a political party but also represented a crucial chapter in Bangladesh’s history. Recognized as a Very, Very Important Person (VVIP) of the State, Zia’s contributions to democracy and the promotion of a multi-party political culture were acknowledged by the government.
Yunus praised Khaleda Zia’s unwavering leadership that played a pivotal role in steering the nation towards democracy and freedom from undemocratic conditions. He emphasized her dedication to national welfare, people-oriented leadership, and firm resolve, which earned her respect across the country.
Yunus reflected on Zia’s political journey, noting her entry into politics in 1982 following her husband’s death. Her leadership was instrumental in ending an autocratic rule and advancing initiatives such as free education and stipends for girls, marking significant progress in women’s education.
