Mumbai and its suburbs are facing continuous heavy rainfall for the third day, with the city division recording 300 mm of rain and the eastern and western suburbs seeing 380 mm and 345 mm, respectively over the last 48 hours.
In response to the unprecedented rainfall and strong winds of 70 to 80 km/h, the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) has activated its entire machinery to address the situation promptly. The BMC’s Disaster Management Department is vigilantly monitoring the conditions to ensure citizen safety remains the top priority.
Special teams have been deployed to vulnerable areas to provide immediate assistance in case of emergencies like tree falls, short circuits, and building collapses. To facilitate quick drainage in waterlogged areas, high-capacity pumps, suction equipment, and additional manpower are being utilized effectively.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) had issued a ‘Red Alert’ for Mumbai for three consecutive days, prompting the BMC to heighten its emergency response readiness. BMC Commissioner Ashwini Bhide has been overseeing operations closely and coordinating efforts to manage potential risks effectively.
With schools and colleges closed as a precautionary measure due to the weather warnings, citizens are advised to adhere to safety guidelines issued by the civic administration. The BMC has emphasized the importance of following official updates and contacting their helpline in case of emergencies.
A Special General Body Meeting is scheduled for July 9 to address the recent rain-related incidents in Mumbai. The meeting is expected to involve discussions on civic preparedness and infrastructure challenges faced during the heavy rainfall period.
