The New Year 2026 in Mumbai started with rain, altering the usual festive atmosphere. Parts of the financial capital experienced showers early Thursday morning, with some areas having moderate rain while others saw light drizzling. By dawn, the rain had eased into a steady drizzle, affecting visibility in key stretches like the Coastal Road and Eastern Freeway.
In contrast, suburban regions from Bandra to Dahisar and Kurla to Mulund had only light and intermittent showers with persistent drizzling. Despite overcast skies, these areas had limited rainfall, keeping roads damp and temperatures cool at 16 degrees Celsius due to chilly winds. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) forecasts a partly cloudy sky with light rain throughout the day for Mumbai and its suburbs.
IMD’s latest forecast predicts light showers over the next 48 hours, with temperatures expected to range between 29 degrees Celsius and 16 degrees Celsius. The rain is likely to improve air quality in the city, with Mumbai’s Air Quality Index (AQI) currently at 122, falling under the ‘moderate’ category. Early risers on New Year’s morning shared updates on social media about the rain, with heavier spells reported in certain areas.
According to IMD, minimum temperatures in Maharashtra will see “no significant change” in the next two days, but a gradual rise of 2 to 3 degrees Celsius is expected in the following four days.
