Myanmar’s junta chief, Min Aung Hlaing, has won the presidency with the most votes among three nominees, as per media reports. His Vice Presidents are Nyo Saw, a former military-appointed Prime Minister, and Nan Ni Ni Aye, the Karen State chair of the military-backed Union Solidarity and Development Party (USDP), according to The Irrawaddy. Min Aung Hlaing recently stepped down as commander-in-chief and appointed General Ye Win Oo to the post before his election.

Elections held in Myanmar in late 2025 and early 2026 saw the USDP emerge victorious, with most opposition parties excluded from participating, The Irrawaddy noted. Min Aung Hlaing took control of Myanmar in 2021 through a coup that ousted the elected government of Aung San Suu Kyi. Claiming electoral fraud in the 2020 elections won by Aung San Suu Kyi’s National League for Democracy (NLD), he justified the coup as a response to a constitutional “state of emergency.”

Following the military takeover, the junta led by Min Aung Hlaing invalidated the 2020 election results, disbanded the NLD, and detained Aung San Suu Kyi, her cabinet members, and numerous democracy activists. The Union Parliament in Myanmar elects the President from three vice-presidential candidates, as mandated by the country’s constitution.
