The Nalanda Literature Festival (NLF) in its debut edition has become a significant platform for voices from the Northeast and other marginalized literary traditions. The four-day festival, which recently concluded, focused on themes crucial to the Northeast, such as language preservation, diaspora identity, indigenous knowledge systems, and cultural continuity.

Scholars and writers emphasized the challenges faced by regions like the Northeast in preserving their rich oral traditions and linguistic diversity, similar to Indian diaspora communities. Participants lauded the festival for its attention to the cultural heritage of the region and the active involvement of writers and authors from Assam and other northeastern states.

During the festival’s final day, tributes were paid to the late eminent Hindi writer and Jnanpith Award laureate Vinod Kumar Shukla, recognized as a transformative literary figure whose minimalist prose influenced modern Hindi literature and inspired writers across India, including the Northeast. Discussions during the festival drew parallels between cultural preservation efforts in the Indian diaspora and those in India’s peripheral regions.

Renowned scholars highlighted the significance of language in shaping identity, resonating with writers and researchers focusing on endangered languages in the Northeast. Sessions like ‘Nalanda: A Window to the World’ underscored Nalanda’s historical role as a global knowledge hub rooted in dialogue and openness, values deemed relevant for culturally diverse regions like the Northeast.

Conversations on representation and inclusion were sparked by the session ‘Beyond the Binary: Transgender Characters in Today’s Literature’, with a call for government recognition of transgender and LGBTQ+ writers. The festival also featured cultural sessions celebrating food, poetry, and folk traditions, emphasizing the importance of documenting and safeguarding local cultures, particularly in the context of the Northeast.

Festival Director Ganga Kumar expressed satisfaction with the inaugural NLF edition, noting its success in reviving Nalanda’s essence as a platform for diverse ideas and cultures. The Nalanda Literature Festival 2025, with its inclusive approach and focus on regional voices, emerged as a significant platform aligning with the cultural aspirations of the Northeast and other underrepresented regions of India.
