Namibia’s captain Gerhard Erasmus admitted that losing the toss and lacking aggression in their chase led to a 31-run defeat against the USA in their T20 World Cup 2026 match at MA Chidambaram Stadium. USA set a formidable total of 199 runs, benefiting from a strong start and late runs from their middle order. Despite Louren Steenkamp’s fifty, Namibia could only manage 168/6 in their 20 overs.
Erasmus mentioned that batting first could have been advantageous on the good scoring wicket but accepted the toss outcome. He credited USA’s top-order batsmen for their exceptional performance, especially the opening partnership that set the foundation for the 199-run target. Namibia’s bowlers staged a comeback in the middle overs, restricting USA and momentarily shifting the game’s momentum.
Praising leg-spinner Willem Myburgh for his control and skill, Erasmus highlighted the importance of such talent in T20 cricket. Although Namibia had a solid start in their chase, the lack of intent towards the end hindered their progress. Erasmus acknowledged the challenge of adjusting to the pitch’s slowness and emphasized the need for more aggressive play.
With this defeat, Namibia is eliminated from Super 8 contention in the tournament. Their final match against Pakistan is scheduled for February 18th at the Sinhalese Sports Club in Colombo.
