Former England captain Nasser Hussain has expressed disappointment with the pitch conditions at Lord’s during the ongoing Test match between England and New Zealand. Hussain labeled the pitch as “substandard” and not suitable for Test cricket, especially after witnessing 33 wickets fall in just the first two days of the match. Despite efforts to improve the pitch, including relaying the outfield and using steam treatment, the surface has continued to face criticism.
Hussain highlighted that while both teams have displayed top-quality bowling skills, the pitch itself has consistently underperformed. He emphasized the importance of the pitch quality at such a historic venue like Lord’s, which is hosting its 150th Test match. The lack of pace, inconsistent bounce, and seam movement issues have persisted, making it challenging for batsmen to perform effectively.
The criticism of the Lord’s pitch comes in the wake of similar concerns raised about the Melbourne Cricket Ground pitch in a recent Test match. The International Cricket Council (ICC) is expected to assess and provide feedback on the pitch conditions at Lord’s following this Test. Former New Zealand bowler Simon Doull echoed Hussain’s sentiments, suggesting that moving matches away from Lord’s might be necessary if the pitch quality does not improve.
Stuart Broad, another former England cricketer, acknowledged the excitement and entertainment provided by the current pitch conditions at Lord’s. While recognizing the need for better balance between bat and ball, Broad appreciated the engaging cricket on display. He emphasized the importance of pitches that challenge both batsmen and bowlers, allowing for competitive and entertaining Test matches.
