National Democratic Alliance (NDA) leaders have criticized Congress leader Rahul Gandhi following historian Ramachandra Guha’s remarks. Guha referred to Gandhi as a “major burden” on the Congress party, sparking controversy. Guha highlighted Gandhi’s leadership shortcomings, stating that he lacks gravitas and fails to learn from past mistakes.
The criticism intensified as Guha, previously close to the Congress leadership, questioned the party’s functioning as a “family firm” under the Nehru-Gandhi family. BJP spokesperson Shehzad Poonawalla labeled Gandhi a “non-performing asset” and a political liability. Poonawalla emphasized widespread rejection of Gandhi by the public, alliance partners, and even some Congress members.
BJP leader Syed Shahnawaz Hussain expressed doubts about the Congress’s future under Gandhi’s leadership. He emphasized the party’s consistent electoral losses and the perception of Gandhi as a burden. Similarly, BJP MLA C. P. Singh criticized Gandhi’s communication skills and suggested that Congress leaders carry his burden due to his family lineage.
JD-U spokesperson Rajiv Ranjan Prasad highlighted the seriousness of Guha’s remarks, questioning Gandhi’s relevance within the party. Prasad noted concerns among Congress leaders about retaining power under Gandhi’s leadership in states where they currently govern. He urged the party to heed intellectuals’ critiques like Guha’s for introspection and improvement.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Krishna Hegde echoed the sentiment, emphasizing the need for the Congress to seek leadership beyond the Nehru-Gandhi family to progress and succeed.
