Star javelin thrower Neeraj Chopra’s spot in India’s athletics squad for the Commonwealth Games 2026 is uncertain despite being on the provisional list released by the Athletics Federation of India (AFI). AFI spokesperson Adille Sumariwalla mentioned that Chopra is the sole athlete selected who has not met the required qualification mark.
Sumariwalla clarified that Neeraj Chopra must still qualify to secure his place. While other athletes have already met the qualifying standard, Chopra needs to achieve it. The Olympic champion is expected to compete soon to fulfill the criteria for his selection.
Discussions revolve around Neeraj Chopra and triple jumper Selva Prabhu, whose participation hinges on their upcoming performances. Chopra, who is recovering from an injury, is yet to confirm his return to competition, delaying the final decision on his selection for the Commonwealth Games.
The federation is awaiting details on Chopra’s competition schedule as he works on regaining match fitness. Sumariwalla mentioned that Neeraj Chopra is in good training shape and is expected to start competing in the next few days. Jyoti Yaraji, a middle-distance runner, is also progressing well in her recovery and training to return to competition.
