A Nepali mountain guide, Bijay Ghimire, aged 35, passed away due to altitude sickness while acclimatizing in the Mount Qomolangma region. Ghimire, who had previously summited the 8,848.86-meter peak three times, was fulfilling his duties as a guide when the tragic incident occurred. The Department of Tourism confirmed the issuance of 492 climbing permits for Mount Everest this spring season.
Two climbers, an Indian mountaineer, Nimish Kumar Singh, and a Sherpa guide, Pembha Tenduk Sherpa, were injured in a serac collapse along the Khumbu Icefall route on Mount Everest on May 5. The collapse, caused by falling ice, struck members of the expedition team during their ascent from Camp II to Camp I. The Khumbu Icefall is notorious for its dangers, including ice shifts and serac collapses, especially in the early climbing season.
Following the accident, a swift rescue operation was conducted by Sherpa guides from Pioneer Adventure Pvt. Ltd. and Summit Force Expedition. The injured climbers were airlifted to Kathmandu for medical treatment from Lukla airport near Mount Everest. Despite challenges such as increased climbing fees and flight disruptions due to global conflicts, Nepal continues to attract numerous mountaineers this spring, with many aiming to conquer Mount Everest.
