Newly inducted Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) member Bhupen Borah criticized the Congress leadership, highlighting a significant contrast in accessibility between the two parties. Borah, who recently joined the BJP, expressed disappointment in his inability to secure a meeting with the Gandhi family after several years in the Congress, while noting that Union Home Minister Amit Shah met him promptly within five minutes.
Borah further mentioned that senior Congress leader Gaurav Gogoi took nine months to visit him, whereas Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma reached out within 24 hours of his decision to leave the Congress. He emphasized these instances as indicative of the differing political cultures and treatment of leaders within the two parties.
The new BJP member criticized the Congress for its alleged disconnect with grassroots workers and senior leaders, suggesting a decline in the party’s leadership accessibility and decision-making efficiency. Borah also questioned the opposition alliance’s strategy in Assam, pointing out that the Congress holds a strong position in only 24 Assembly constituencies and criticizing their focus on minority-dominated areas as a political misstep.
Borah’s move to the BJP, marked by his formal entry in the presence of state BJP chief Dilip Saikia and senior leaders, is viewed as a significant political development ahead of the upcoming Assembly elections in Assam. His statements are anticipated to escalate the political rivalry between the BJP and Congress in the state.
